Aldabra Giant Tortoise

The first type of tortoise I own is the Aldabra Giant tortoise. The Aldabra Giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys Gigantea) are from the islands of Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles.

They are the second largest tortoise in the world just behind the Galapagos Giant tortoise.

Like all other tortoise species, the Aldabra Giant tortoise has a high domed shaped shell, heavy body and large scaled legs. These hard shells serve as heavy armoured protection from potential predators.

The Aldabra Giant tortoise is a herbivore (main source of food are leaves, fruit and grass) and has a very long neck to exploit low hanging tree branches for food.

The average size can measure up to 120-150 cm in length and they can weigh an average of 250 kg for males, less for females.

There is a debate that these tortoises can live more than 200 years old. As a pet they are really very popular and highly demanded for collectors even though they are a costly aquisition and have high additional upkeep needs.

Important things to consider when keeping a Giant Aldabra is that you need an extra big space to house them as they will eventually grow very big over time and require longtime dedication.
