Western Hognose

The Western Hognose (Heterodon Nasicus) is endemic to North America.

It got the name because of its “hog-like” look. They are considered as small snakes which rarely exceed a length of 50cm. This snake is a non threat to humans even though they appear much like rattlesnakes to the untrained eye however they have rear fangs instead.

There is still a debate on whether the mild toxin of a Hognose’s bite results from it’s saliva or from an extremely mild venom produced in glands that connect to it’s rear fangs. There has never been a case of death or severe injury from a Hognose’s bite ever recorded, therefore they are not regarded as poisonous.

As a pet they are great for beginners as they are small in size and relatively safe for anyone. With a cute hog like face, who could resist?

They are aslo not picky eaters, so basically feeding them is pretty easy. This species has been bred in captivity into a variety of colours and morphs.
