The Savannah monitor (Varanus Exanthematicus) is a medium-sized Monitor lizard that is native to Africa. They are also known as the Bosc’s monitor in Europe.

Savannah monitors are stoutly built and have short limbs and toes. Their maximum size is around 1m in total length. They have powerful jaws and they are expert diggers.

Their diet consist of insects, eggs, rodents, small reptiles and small mammals. As a pet they are extremely intelligent and love to bask under hot weather conditions. frequent handling is needed so that they will get used to a human touch. One common problem during captivity is that they tend to be over fed.

Due to the enthusiastic feeding respond from these lizards, keepers tend to enjoy and forget by feeding them too much and over time cause death from obesity, a sad fact that some keepers ignore. That is why it is really important to give them a healthy controlled balanced diet.
