One of the most common pet reptiles kept by reptiles enthusiasts and lovers are Iguanas. Iguanas are herbivourous reptiles. There are many types of iguanas, the most common types being the green iguanas native to tropical areas of Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. In some places they are considered as pests. That’s why many of them are killed.
Iguanas can be futher catogorized into Common iguana and Morph Iguana. Morph Iguana has variety of colours. These morph iguanas are highly prised and in great demand in the reptile keepering community.
The more popular Morph Iguanas are Blue Iguana, Yellow (Albino Iguana T-), Red Albino T-, Red Albino T+, Snow Iguana and etc. As a keeper I had always wanted to own these beautiful Morph Iguanas. I am fortunate enough to be able to work and own beautiful Red Albino T+ & T-. Like all reptiles iguanas need UVA + UVB.
As they are cold blooded animals they need heat to keep their blood warm and metabolism high, so in captive breeding it is critically important to daily bask your reptiles in the sun. One difference between common and Morph Iguanas is that Morph Iguanas do not change dark colour even after extensive long time basking under the sun. Proper UVA + UVB lighting is required in their enclosure to ensure they receive the right rays.
It’s also critical to keep Hot & Cold areas in the enclosure as it is an important factor to sucessfully keeping a healthy iguana. Their diet consists of fruit and vegetables and a careful balanced diet combined in a healthy formula to keep iguanas health in top condition.
There are many dietary pellets for iguanas in the market. I personally use rep-cal iguana food for my Morph Iguanas as they have the most balanced and complete diet so no extra vitamins or calcium are needed.
Handling iguanas are fun but there are some factors that need to be taken seriously.
First of all iguanas have really sharp claws frequent trimming using handling gloves is recommended. Second the males are territorial animals.
Which means they will attack any other male in the area. During mating season most males behaviour will change.
They can really be aggressive and trust me you don’t want to get bitten by them. Iguanas have razor sharp teeth that are designed to shred leaves.
Proper diet and care is criticall important and failing to take proper care will result in them contracting common deseases for iguans and other reptiles.
The two most common diseases are Mettalic Bone Disease (MBD) and bladder stone which will usually result in death.
I have personally owned a few Iguana Morphs. (Red AlbinoT+, Red Albino T- and Red Hypo).
Thanks to my good friend and mentor (Paulus Wikar) I am able to keep them as pets. They are fun to keep and each morph has different characteristics and personalities.
I Also own a male Lewisi Hybrid which I named Momo Azhura. He is a very amazing and docile cyclura. Lewisi Hybrid is not a pure Blue Iguana/ Grand Cayman Iguana (Cyclura Lewisi).
Personally I love this reptile as they truly look prehistoric. I own a male Rhino Iguana which I maned KING.
Another species of iguana i own is the Ctenosaura Pectinata mostly know as Mexican spiny-tailed Iguana (A.K.A Banana Iguana).
Well as we all know from their name they are originated from Mexico.
